IS IT SAFE TO GO IN A FLOAT TANK WHILE PREGNANT?
While carrying a child is arguably the most distinct honor of a lifetime, it doesn’t come without consequence to the body in which it burdens. Especially during the third trimester, when physical ache, mental strain, and social isolation is at its peak, we receive many expecting-mothers asking if floating is safe for them. Rest assured, not only is floating safe for pregnant bodies, but pregnant bodies will likely see the immediate rewards of floating better than anyone else!
Of course, we encourage all expecting mothers to ask their doctors before floating (especially during your first trimester), but our enthusiastic pregnant members will tell you–not only is floating safe and effective, but it makes those 9 months a lot more fun and manageable. In fact, float therapy is a popular pain-management/ stress alleviant recommendation by doulas and midwives!
Let’s break down the main points why floating is a game changer for pregnancy:
MUSCLE RELAXANT
Due to the extremely high volume of epsom salt dissolved into the tank water (1,500 lbs to be exact), our bodies become effortlessly weightless and buoyant–two adjectives that aren’t often affiliated with pregnancy! This environment gives aching muscles and bones a much-needed break, and alleviates stress and weight strained on the back, torso, and knees from pregnant bodies. All your extra weight will be dissipated, and you will feel light as a feather (imagine that)!
EMOTIONAL STABILITY / MENTAL CLARITY
The controlled space and silence (or ambient sounds, should you choose) is the perfect environment to help offset the hormonal irregularities and emotional overwhelm that accompanies pregnancy. Floating is an amazing tool to bring equilibrium back to your mental balance, through regulating the amygdala’s production of cortisol (the stress hormone). Cortisol lessens the lactic acid in the muscles, so you leave feeling restored, stabilized, and with ease.
GENERAL COMFORT
During a time when even laying on your bed feels uncomfortable, being in an anti-gravity space is a welcomed reprieve!
MAGNESIUM ABSORPTION
Magnesium has a long laundry-list of physical benefits for the body–from heart health, to detoxification, to bone health! For a complete rundown, read our magnesium-dedicated journal entry here! Simply put, while floating, magnesium is absorbed straight through your skin, which benefits the health of both you and your baby!
BETTER SLEEP
