The First Time Floater's Guide to Sensory Deprivation
Whether you're seeking relief from the demands of city living, a break from digital overload, or simply an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, flotation therapy is a great way to elevate your well-being in mind, body, and spirit. That said, we know your first float can seem daunting -- that's why we created this guide to help you prepare!
What Is Float Therapy?
Sensory deprivation tank therapy involves lying in a specially designed tank filled with water and Epsom salt. This allows you to float effortlessly, creating a sensation of weightlessness. The environment is kept at skin temperature, blurring the line between your body and the water.
The concept of flotation therapy revolves around reducing external stimuli, providing a unique opportunity for you to relax and be introspective. The experience of floatation therapy aims to alleviate stress, enhance mental clarity, and promote an overall sense of well-being! With the absence of light, sound, and gravity, sensory deprivation facilitates profound relaxation and mental rejuvenation.
Flotation therapy is not only a physical experience but also a mental and spiritual journey. It offers a rare opportunity to escape the sensory overload of NYC, and explore the depths of inner consciousness.
What Are The Benefits of Sensory Deprivation?
The benefits of flotation therapy are extensive! Physically, the buoyancy provided by the Epsom salt-infused water relieves pressure on the joints and muscles, promoting relaxation and alleviating discomfort. The magnesium from the Epsom salt is also absorbed through the skin, contributing to tons of benefits, including muscle recovery.
Mentally, flotation therapy offers a unique environment for stress reduction and mental clarity. The absence of external stimuli allows the mind to enter a state of relaxation, which in turn promotes a sense of calm and can even reduce anxiety. Our guests find that this often leads to improved sleep quality, enhanced cognitive function, and a greater sense of mental balance.
What Happens During A Sensory Deprivation Tank Session at Vessel?
A typical flotation therapy session begins with a brief orientation with one of our guides, where you'll become acquainted with what to expect throughout your session and the flotation tank itself. After choosing from our selection of pre-float doses, you'll have time to set your intention and settle in! You'll also be able to choose your light/sound preferences for your float; though our tanks are designed for full sound/light deprivation, if that sounds daunting we also offer a variety of sound baths and guided meditations to enhance your journey. You'll also choose your post-float drink before being shown to your private float room!
Upon completion of the session, you'll emerge from the floatation tank and shower to remove the salt from your skin and hair. We also have a vanity room stocked with a Dyson hair dryer and hair products to help get you ready to reenter the outside world! Then, you'll head to our lobby to enjoy a post-float drink while you reflect on your float! Many people use this time to journal or simply sit with their thoughts.
Do I Need To Prepare Anything?
Prior to your very first time or float therapy session, we recommend avoiding caffeine or heavy meals a few hours before your appointment. We also recommend you avoid shaving the day of your float.
By design, we have everything you need for a successful float experience right here in the studio. Each float tank is in your own private room with a shower, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, ear plugs, face cream, q-tips, deodorant, towels, and fresh socks! No clothing is necessary while inside the tank, and all of our products are paraben-free & sulfate-free. We even have vaseline to serve as a liquid bandage to protect any small cuts while inside the tank. If you would like to bring anything extra to help make you feel fresh after your float, such as makeup or other personal hygiene products, you are welcome to come prepared with these items.
What Else Should I Know Ahead of My Appointment?
If you're looking to optimize your flotation therapy session, consider incorporating mindfulness practices such as deep breathing during your float session.
Exploring different body positions within the tank can also enhance the experience, allowing you to find the most comfortable and supportive posture for you. Experimenting with gentle movements or stretches can release tension and contribute to a sense of ease!
Embracing a sense of surrender and letting go of expectations can also enhance the therapeutic benefits of flotation therapy; allowing room for yourself to be fully present in the moment and releasing the grip of everyday concerns can create space for inner exploration.
Now that you're ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery, relaxation, wellness, and revitalization, embrace the opportunity to redefine your well-being!
