Preparing For Your Float Session

If you’re new to floating, you may be a little unsure about what to expect and how to prepare. We have you covered. This guide will have you walking into your first float like a pro! You will get the most from your time in the float tank with just a little preparation.

Avoid caffeine or any stimulants at least 3 hours ahead of your float. That can interrupt the relaxation response!

Avoid heavy meals.  A snack or a light bite 60-90 minutes before your session is the perfect strategy to keep from feeling hungry in the tank. On the contrary, avoid eating any heavy meals that could make you feel lethargic  or unsettled.

Most Relaxing Float Experience

Avoid shaving the day of your float.  Shaving creates micro-cuts on the skin’s surface. While water with 33% salt content is technically an excellent disinfectant to these micro-cuts, it can cause a stinging sensation, which is rather distracting from an ideal meditative state. For this reason, avoid shaving for an entire day before your float.

Schedule during a calm time of your day.  You know your days and schedule best--book your float during the time of day when you feel most at ease.

Bring anything extraneous that would make you feel comfortable.  Which will likely be nothing!  By design, we have everything you need for a successful float experience right here in the studio. Each float tank is in your own private room with a shower, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, ear plugs, face cream, q-tips, deodorant, towels, and fresh socks! No clothing is necessary while inside the tank, and all of our products are paraben-free & sulfate-free. We even have vaseline to serve as a liquid bandage to protect any small cuts while inside the tank. After your float, we have a vanity room stocked with a Dyson hair dryer and hair products to help get you ready to reenter the outside world! All of that to say... if you would like to bring anything extra to help make you feel fresh after your float, such as makeup or other personal hygiene products, you are welcome to come prepared with these items.

Bring a journal! Don’t be surprised if you have some personal break throughs while in the tank! A journal is a great way to capture any sacred moments experienced within the tank. Guests are also welcome to use our lounge area to read, write, or simply enjoy the stillness with a beverage and simply be. All of these reflective resources are also provided within our lounge library, but you are welcome to bring your own material, as well!

What To Expect During Your First Time In The Tank

Now that you're prepared on what to do beforehand, you might have some questions about what to expect once you actually get into the tank!

Preparation - Before you enter the tank at the float spa, you'll be advised to shower and rinse off with our charcoal body wash to wash off any oils or lotions.

Entering the Tank - Once inside the tank, you'll lie down and find yourself floating! Take your time to get comfortable and find a position that allows you to fully relax. You can choose to float with your arms by your side or above your head.

Floating Experience - As you settle into the tank, you will gradually become aware of the sensation of floating. The warm water and Epsom salt will support your body effortlessly, creating a feeling of weightlessness.

Sense of Time - Without external cues, your sense of time may become distorted in the process of floating. Some individuals may feel like they've been in the tank for mere minutes, while in reality, it has been much longer!

Exiting the Tank - When your session comes to an end, the lights in the tank will gradually come back on, signaling that it's time to exit. Take your time to readjust to the light and slowly get out of the tank to shower, and then head on over to our lobby for your post-float drink.

Different Types of Sensory Deprivation Tanks

As the popularity of sensory deprivation tanks continues to grow, so does the variety of tank options available. Below are a few different types of sensory deprivation tanks you may come across, and our takes on them.

Float Pods: These tanks are often smaller and enclosed, as pictured below. While they do allow for complete sensory isolation, they can be perceived as claustrophobic and cramped.

Open-Air Float Pools: Open-air tanks, also known as float pools, provide a more spacious and less enclosed experience. Though these float pools do not offer a full sensory deprivation experience, as they’re subject to air draft and have no insulation to keep out noise and light, they do offer a spacious option for those looking to experience a sense of weightlessness.

Float Tanks (also called Float Cabins): We at Vessel are home to 6 float tanks! In our opinion, float tanks offer the best of both worlds - a more intimate and secluded experience, while still remaining comfortably spacious. By being an entirely enclosed space, they are designed to block out all external light and sound, creating a true sensory deprivation environment. With 8' high ceilings, it’s much easier to feel a sense of openness for optimal comfort and relaxation.

When choosing a sensory deprivation tank, we recommend considering factors like personal comfort, space requirements, and the overall ambiance of the tank. Taking these all into account will make your float the best experience for your preferences!
